Impacted Teeth: Treatments and Solutions

Impacted teeth are a dental condition that can affect people of all ages. It refers to those teeth that fail to fully emerge through the gums due to obstruction of other teeth, soft tissues or bone; which can cause discomfort, dental alignment problems and other complications if not properly treated.

What are they and how can we treat impacted teeth?

Retained teeth are those that fail to emerge through the gums and remain partially or completely within the bone tissue. This phenomenon usually occurs due to lack of space in the jaw, the presence of supernumerary teeth or obstruction caused by soft tissue.

Treatment of impacted teeth may vary depending on the specific situation of each patient. Some common approaches include observation and monitoring of its evolution, extraction of the affected tooth or repositioning of the tooth.

What does it mean to have an impacted tooth?

Having a retained tooth involves a series of complications that go beyond physical discomfort. Impacted teeth can cause pain, inflammation and increased risk of infection in the surrounding area. In addition, the pressure exerted by impacted teeth can displace other teeth, causing alignment problems and malocclusion.

Complications arising from impacted teeth

Complications arising from impacted teeth can include the formation of dentigerous cysts, which are fluid-filled pockets that form around impacted teeth. These cysts, in addition to causing damage to the surrounding tissue, can cause destruction of the jawbone in severe cases.

Impacted teeth also exert additional pressure on adjacent teeth, resulting in misalignment of the dentition and bite problems.

How to treat impacted teeth

There are several options for treating impacted teeth, depending on the severity of the case and the position of the impacted tooth. These options include:

Limiting itself to monitoring its evolution

In some cases, especially if the impacted tooth is not causing discomfort or problems, the initial approach may be to simply observe and monitor its evolution over time, making use of periodic radiographs to monitor any changes in the position or impaction of the impacted tooth.

Extract the tooth

If the impacted tooth is causing discomfort, affecting the alignment of other teeth or posing any oral health risk, extraction of the impacted tooth may be recommended.

Repositioning the tooth

When the retained tooth is a permanent tooth and its position is favorable, repositioning of the tooth through an oral surgery procedure can be considered. This approach involves surgical exposure of the retained tooth and its subsequent placement in the proper position in the dental arch.

Who is most susceptible to impacted teeth?

The people most susceptible to impacted teeth are those whose baby teeth or permanent teeth have not erupted at the proper time during their development. In particular, wisdom teeth, commonly known as wisdom teeth, have a high probability of remaining impacted. Lack of space in underdeveloped jaws and prolonged retention of primary teeth may also contribute to tooth retention.
