Interceptive orthodontics in Panama

Who doesn't want the best for their children? If your child has bite problems, interceptive orthodontics is your best choice to avoid future consequences, since it modifies the jaw structure and corrects problems from the base.

What is interceptive orthodontics?

In particular, interceptive interceptive orthodontics or infant orthodontics, is a technique that is performed to correct malocclusions early in the facial and maxillary growth of children.

It is undoubtedly a minimally invasive technique that is applied at a stage in which the bones have not yet developed definitively, so it allows correcting and modifying bone behavior.

During this time we also coincide at the dental level with mixed dentition; that is, the child has both milk teeth and permanent teeth.

When applying interceptive and corrective orthodonticsWe will not only treat the teeth, but also the bone growth. In this sense, its main objective is to avoid the application of more costly and complex procedures in the future, when bone development has already been completed.

When should interceptive orthodontics be done?

First and foremost, oral health care professionals recommend the treatment of interceptive orthodontics for children as soon as they show full development of the upper and lower incisor teeth (i.e., this should occur between 6 and 8 years of age).

In fact, pediatric orthodontics is recommended for children between 6 and 12 years of age, a stage when the growth of the maxillary bones can still be guided to improve masticatory function and achieve an optimal esthetic effect.

For this reason, interceptive orthodontics in adults is a utopia, since in these cases the bone growth is complete and it is not possible to mold it.

The interceptive orthodontics treats several problems at the same time, among them:

Types of interceptive orthodontics

In interceptive orthodontic treatment, the types of appliances to be used can be fixed or removable. This choice is made by the orthodontist according to the problem under study and he/she will select the most appropriate one.

Fixed appliance or extraoral traction mask

First of all, these appliances are cemented to the teeth or to bands placed on the molars to stimulate the development of the maxilla or mandible.

They fulfill several functions, among them: Bone, dentoalveolar or dentary expansion. In spite of its unaesthetic appearance, it is a painless treatment that lasts approximately one year depending on the case; and it is possible to identify among these types the disjunctor, easy mask, extraoral anchorage or chin guard.

Removable appliances or palatal expanders

Also called removable or false palate, they are those that can be removed by the patient himself. They are classified into two types: intraoral and extraoral.

The intraoral ones have the function of directing the jaws towards their proper position, while the extraoral one stimulates and stops the growth of the jaws.

Treatment with removable devices takes approximately one to two months and is generally recommended after the use of braces.

Who is interceptive orthodontics for?

As we indicated before, interceptive orthodontics is only indicated for children, who in most cases end up wearing conventional braces after this treatment.

In particular, candidates for interceptive and corrective orthodontics are children who have problems with biting or chewing, those who cannot pronounce words or sounds well, those with obvious crowding or those who have widely spaced teeth.

Before and after interceptive orthodontics

The interceptive orthodontics provides long-term results that will facilitate any subsequent treatment. This is best evidenced through each of its stages:

Finally, it is worth mentioning that the reason why some children should wear braces and others should not is because each dentition is unique and individual.

Based on the knowledge of the characteristics that make us unique and different, our dentition is no exception to the rule. For this reason, it is recommended to take children to the orthodontist very early in order to act preventively and avoid problems in the future.
